This is my box turtle. I found him in the middle of a busy road in St. Louis in 1968 (yes - over 40 years ago!) He was already an adult so I don't know his true age. The curator of the reptiles at the St. Louis Zoo actually said Harriet was a female - hence the name. He was wrong. Even the experts can mess up at times. Harriet lives in a huge enclosure and likes to eat fruit, vegetables and a bit of protein at times. He will still hiss at me so has never really become what you would call a tame pet but he is really interesting. He becomes sluggish in the winter and doesn't eat much, even though he is living in the house. He really gets animated if you give him an earthworm. I plan to make arrangements in my will for him.
